Other January Happenings

A classmate's birthday party at a dance studio. Hannah was cold (it was chilly in there) and didn't know anyone since it was Z's classmate, and spent the majority of the time on my lap whining, but once she got over all of that she claims the last 15 minutes were the best party ever.
Hannah got a medal in the Eskimo Olympics at her school.
New Nerf decisions are SO HARD.
 He went with the bow.
There is now a semi-permanent fort on his lower bunk and this sign on the door. Uncle Adam is a foe.
There was a weekend in there where the weather people really hyped up an ice storm we were supposed to get and we ended up getting nothing. The whole town was shut down, so we went for a walk.

I dropped the kiddoes off at a 4 hour open gym at a gymnastics place. They loved it, and so did I :)

Smoothies after the open gym, before ATA.
Ms. Hannah at her school playground.
Zane's class put on a reading theater with puppet show. There were 3 groups: 1 reading, 1 doing shadow puppets, and another doing music. Zane was a puppeteer for Three Billygoats Gruff and read the part of the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk.

I can French braid - kinda proud of myself!
 Playdate with a friend.

Flowers and Friendship Rally

Another weekend, another march/rally. It looks like this might be our routine nowadays with all of the scary decrees coming from the White House. This time it was a family affair at the Flowers and Friendship Rally to support our Muslim friends and neighbors. No official numbers have been released yet, but I'd estimate that there were around 500 people there...impressive for something that was organized yesterday!! We gathered in Peace Park, near the columns, in a show of support and solidarity before walking to the Islamic Center where we were greeted with smiles and words of thanks from the men and women at the center. It was a beautiful thing to be a part of.
Anyone else notice that the citizens from the countries included in the ban have not been a part of an act of terrorism on American soil in over a decade? Oh BUT, our president doesn't have money tied up in those countries. Does he think no one would realize that?!

The crowd at Peace Park.
My original plan was to go to the rally by myself, but Ms. Hannah wanted to make a sign and carry it herself. OK!! She came up with her message - which says Love For All Kids - all by herself, traced the letters, and then decorated it. She was very proud and got lots of love from others in the crowd. I could not have been happier to have the whole family there!
The back of her sign.
Mason and I found a website with Arabic signs. One side says "We love our Muslim neighbors" and the other says "Our homeland is your homeland." We verified that that's what they really said with a gentleman in the crowd who wanted to take our picture (he thought it was funny that we were checking.)

Someone gave us a yellow rose (a sign of friendship) to place on the steps of the Islamic Center. Hannah proudly placed it up there.
Look at all those people!! Love it.

UPDATE: Hannah made the Columbia Missourian online!

Women's March

Yesterday, January 21st, 2017 was a great day. The women all over the WORLD showed our new president that they will not stand by silently and allow him to continue to objectify, silence, belittle, and insult us. We are here. We ARE the storm! Get ready, Trump, because I don't think your fragile ego can take it.

Zane and Hannah are my two most precious reasons for getting out there. I was not a political person before November, but I'm quickly learning. With all of the injustice, racism, and lies coming out of Washington, I can no longer turn my head the other way. Instead, I will give it all I have to ensure a bright future for both of them and I want them to know that I will fight for them.
Two of my friends and I met up with 3600 of our other friends for a walk through downtown. We were met with countless honks of support along the way, but of course there were some naysayers in the mix. Not surprisingly, the hecklers were all white frat boys, one of whom shouted at the crowd to get a job, which lead to uproarious laughter because is he not the one yelling at a crowd of peaceful protesters from the balcony of a bar at 2 in the afternoon? Haha!
It was uplifting to be involved in this historic movement, both on a local level and on a much larger scale. It was empowering to come home after the march and see all of the sister marches that took place all over the world! It's not just about women either, there were tons of men there supporting their wives, daughters, sisters, or who were there alone because it's the right thing to do. Thank you to everyone out there who is fighting with us, even if you couldn't be at a march yesterday!
Why I march:
  • To join with likeminded, kindred spirits, and feel the power and sense of community when we merge together for a single purpose.
  • To use my voice to make an impact beyond sitting at my computer keyboard.
  • To forcefully and publicly declare that it is wrong and un-American to be sexist or misogynistic, regardless of one’s station in life, wealth, or fame.
  • To speak on behalf of those who are silenced and marginalized, or are too ill or elderly or poor to travel and attend the march themselves.
  • To acknowledge publicly that we live in a highly paternalistic, inherently sexist, and often misogynistic society, even in 2017.
  • To fight for the rights of my daughter (and her daughters) to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and to not be a second class citizen in the country I hold dear.
  • To show my son that our nations leader is in no way a role model.
  • To make clear that women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights, once and for all.
  • To scream from the rooftops that love is love. Black lives matter. Climate change is real. Immigrants make America great (because unless you're a Native American, we're all immigrants). Support for public education.
People were marching for different reasons. Some were there to support women's healthcare/Planned Parenthood, some were there for the Black Lives Matter movement, some were there for climate change (it was 62 degrees), and some were there for LGBTQ rights, but the beautiful thing was that whatever the reason that brought people out, they were out! They were not sitting at home. We were all united in one truth. TRUMP NEEDS TO GO. NOW. There is no wait and see. We saw what he could do on the campaign trail and during his cabinet appointments. His agenda is plain as day. "We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Wands up!" I'm sure when Trump said he would unite the country, this is not what he meant.
RISE! Love to you all.

New Years with Grandpa Dave & Grandma Doris

Grandpa Dave and Grandma Doris were here over New Years for a visit! I apologize for the delay in posting, my phone didn't want to transfer the photos into the iCloud (isn't technology fun?!). The pics showed up today and here we are. Of course, presents first.

Trying out the new water color brushes.
Out to lunch at Flat Branch. Grandma wasn't sure which flavor of beer to order so she went the safe route and got a flight...a rather large flight :)
After lunch we were full and in need of a short walk so we headed over to the Quad to shoot some arrows.

The weather was bitter cold and there was a lot of hanging out around the house, but the kiddos needed to stretch out from time to time so Doris and I took them to the park near our house.

Painting the wind chime from Aunt Kristy and Uncle Sam.
On New Years Eve the kids went to bed at their normal 8pm with no complaints! The adults managed to stay up until midnight just sitting around chatting and telling stories. Here is our New Years Day dinner.
 Morning game of Kerfuffle.
An outing to Bass Pro (because it's large and indoor!).

Grandma and Grandpa offered to stay with the kids while we snuck away for dinner at Sycamore downtown one night. It was great and nearly deserted since it was right after New Years.
Another large, indoor place is the library!
After ATA one night, we stopped by the Magic Tree. Doris mentioned that she was sad that most houses weren't turning their Christmas lights on anymore so we got her a solid dose of cheer!

One more game session before they left the next day. It was such a great visit, thanks for coming out guys!
And what a difference a day makes! Overnight we got snow!
